Warriors Lament

The stillness somehow deepens around me
Quiet movement, stealthy dark shadows shifting
Dim new day light just beginning to dapple the green
Sucking footsteps across the loam dank muddy ground
They come…

Heart thumping, sweat runs, eyes sweep the twilight
Alert near panic, I hear the clinking of their weapons
Quiet voices, language wrong, somehow I must know
Pull further down, deeper yet, down in my water filled hole
They come…

I hear their breath, smell their sweat, can almost reach and touch
My mind recoils, must leave this dream, this nightmare in the bush
Starting soon, I know the drill, my personal place in hell
I ready my tools, prepare once more, my heart bent to the kill
Fear, sadness…

How came I here, this forlorn place, full of danger, anger and fear
My soul misplaced, all I hold dear, my peace, my life, my love
All that I was, ever have been, seems ere lost in this great disgrace
These men are deemed my enemies, but I know not the look of their face
Brothers lost…

Will it ever end, can we ever go back
Back to the world as I remember it was
Can I forget this dream, leave it far behind
Will I ever return to my home
Tears, pain, loss…

I make this vow, unto myself, if ever I leave this place
To put aside the nightmare dreams, to build upon this attaint
I will teach my children the ways of love, respect and happiness
But as it starts and I fight to survive, the truth burns in my veins
I will remember, I cannot but, for this nightmare never ends…

The is Life

Colors, flashing, bright, rainbows spinning
A vortex of reality forced into my awareness
Combining to blind my eyes in its cascading madness

Sound, a roaring din of noise,
Voices hidden in the immensities of the silence
Silence falling with deafening chill on the ears of my soul

Flavors, biter, tart, sweet, sour
The biting burn of the acid eating its way inside
Lost ability to taste, numbing death in apathy and demise

Mind filled to bursting, a madness of running thoughts
The swirling emotions weaken my resolve, indecisive
Desire, want, need, lack, all withering my tired old heart

Standing outside, an intricate component, yet removed, apart
Observing the world around me, this bit of imagined existence
Forever trusting my inner vision, answers and truth found inside
I allow all things to come and go, my heart as wide open as the sky

This is Life…

Morning Dew

I walk out this morning, to a world draped in heavy dew
As I walked, awakening to the world, I looked behind me
I found the shape of my soul glistening in my every step
Looking into that mystical window showed me my true self
There, painted in my soul’s shape, I found a map of my life

Reflected in each step, an image of adventure and task
Years of journey stretching out across the twinkling lawn
I turned and walked back along that path of visions
Reliving the stories shinning up from the grass
A rebirth of memories, age dimmed, thought lost

That first meeting of love, learning of my true life partner
The births of my children, the years of their growth
All the joys in sharing their discoveries and wonders
Seeing them blossom into adults, paths stretching before them
And now grandbabies filling my slower days with light

My life has been full, so much happiness and love
A wealth of adventure, so many friends, travels, stories
I turn, and continue on, for I yet live…

Circle of Soul

Sacred places
Held close
Forefathers live within
Guise of envisioned ghost

Dwelling within this spirit
Holding so we can come see
All the beauty of these lands
Where we all can wonder free

Bones turned to dust
Forming new layer upon the earth
New people walk upon
From this we are granted birth

This spirit place, held most sacred
For here is the people’s heart
No path can lead us from it
No distance keep us apart

Soon my time will finally come
When I join with all the others
My soul carried to the spirit lands
So that I may live once more…

I bow to the divine in you
I see the divine spark in you
As I see it in me
The duality of union
The belonging to the all

I honor where your spirit lives
I greet you in the common sharing
We are one
This place of love
This place of truth
Of peace

Equal in all things
All life striving for happiness
See the goodness in others
When you are in that place in you
I am in that place in me

Centered in our interconnection
Together we hear the voice
Hear the wisdom hidden on the wind
A world of possibilities
Let go that which would separate us
Embrace that which would bring us together

Know that you are never alone
Know that you are always loved
This, the beginnings of understanding
All of one family, all of one source
May you find and hold peace and happiness

Free from suffering and sickness
When you look in the mirror
May you see all others reflecting back to you
Be all with the one, living in oneness
One family, one heart, one journey
The brightest light of compassion

A Time For Growth

Daylight fades, and the darkness of night draws nearer
The damp evening air touches the hearts of the people
The old one notices, remembering living the old ways
The old ways, living in peace with all around them
Living in peace with each other, the animals, and the Earth Mother
The old one living now in fear
Fear that his children have turned from the source
Fear of his grand-children’s greed, abuses, and loss
Fear for his dying nation, his dying world

Lost are the voices of drum and flute
The lessons that taught us tolerance and respect
Of taking only what we need, and giving thanks for all we have
Of living with pride, honor, and concern for all life
We no longer hear the old sounds that haunted the night
Gone are the Spirits of the Earth Mother
Gone are the blessings of Spirit
The old one morns the loss of the night sounds of life
Crickets silent, the wind no longer whispering its secrets through the night
The wind bringing only the sound of Earth Mother groaning in her agony and pain
Reliving the memories of distant past

The full moon slowly rises in the night sky
Illuminating the burned out, trash piled landscape around the camp
The old ones tears drip freely on the barren dusty ground
Tears carrying the thoughts of what used to be
And the thoughts continue flowing
Flowing like water in the stream of never lingering moments
Moments from a past when peace and harmony ruled among the nations.
A time when Spirit was strong in the people
When all people knew the importance of all things
Tears carrying memories of how right it used to be
And with the tears, the last hope drains from the old ones heart.

Spirit feels the wet tears flowing across the Earth Mother
He hears the painful thoughts contained within them
Senses the hopelessness and agony of the old one

He speaks:

“My child, why do you stand before me crying for the future?
Why do you turn from what has been given?
Away from the teachings you know so well
Where has your heart gone?

The old one responds:

“Oh Great Spirit, your children have lost your truths.
They now forsake all the gifts you give them
They do not hear the truth of the lessons we offer
They do not heed the guidance laid before them

Others have come from a far away land
They have taken our culture and knowledge away from us
They have driven our children only to know their foreign ways
The ways of greed and abuse, of hate and anger

And our children embrace these new ways
They hold hate close to their hearts, pushing away love and tolerance
They judge any but themselves, blaming the troubles of the world on the others
Their lives are consumed by the need to take back their lands
To exact revenge from evils done in the past
Dark emotions fueled by the wrongs done to their ancestors
A daily existence focused only on pain and loss
They forsake your truths, refuse to know the real importance of life

And I do not know what to do, what to say
My hope is gone, lost to the darkness that now fills my peoples lives”

And Great Spirit spoke again:

“My child, you have forgotten the stories you know so well.
You have forgotten the history of my children,
Hear me well,

For all of times past, this has been the hard way of my children
From the epoch of the great journey across the ice, it was so
As they learned of the truths I offer, learned to live as they should
Learned their place in the world, to value peace, respect, and harmony,
To love freely and rejoice in all of life’s wonders

Even their lives grew and their places within the great circle became complete
They began to share these truths with others
Began to show the others the joy brought by the truth
And yet the others were angered at these truths
The others were filled with jealousy and hatred for what they could see, yet lacked
What they could not or would not understand
For the real truth threatened their power
Challenged their greed
Made their life a farce, baseless in its need

So war came to my children
My children were pushed every further from their homelands
Ever further across the waste of ice and cold
Until, at long last, pushed to these very lands here

And still the others followed
For they could not allow the real truths to change their lives
Could not give up what they held so dear
The things they gathered, lands they held
Their beliefs fashioned to uphold the greed and desire in their souls
They held themselves as special, better than and outside of existence
So much more important than all of the rest of life

A sad time
Tribe against tribe
Warrior against warrior
Brother against brother
Man against all of nature
It has continued for ages long forgotten
A great circle of learning, loosing, and waste
The never-ending battle of light against dark”

The old ones painful wailing continued to flow
A muddy river of tears winding across the muddy ground

“Oh Great Spirit!
Your truth does little to ease my heart
You tell of a long history of turmoil and darkness
Of my people lost for all of time
Never finding peace, never knowing love
Where is the hope I can hold to?
Where is the answer to the questions I hold?
Forgive my ignorance Great Spirit
Forgive my questioning
But I know not what to do
I know not how to help my people.
I know not how to regain hope”

“Be at ease my child, for the answer is within you
Settle your tired and aching heart
Look within, hold to that in you that connects with me
Hold to me and find the answers you seek
Hear my words:

You have within you all you seek
It is for you to help lead your people to the life they need
To help them find the peace and love I intended
Teach them of their place in this world
Of the balance of living with all existence
Of working toward the betterment of life
Rather than fighting against the small darkness bumping at the light

Teach them the importance of life
Of the value in tolerance and acceptance
Tolerance of views differing from their own
Acceptance of the rights of all the different forms of life

Teach them of balance
Of the balance of all things
Of using only what they truly need
Of being thankful of gifts given,

Teach them of the equality of life
Show them their place in all of existence
I hold no one part of all as above any other.
Whether trees, plants, animals, or humans
I hold not one as more than another
All are of equal importance to me
All are loved and cared for by me

Bid them give up their hatred and greed
Show them how to put away their need for revenge and possessions
Teach them these simple truths
And bid them live each day within my light and love
Show them with your life how theirs can and should be.”

The old ones tears dry and clear.
In his eyes you can see the rebirth of hope
The return of truth fills his soul
Love and peace glows across his lined old face.

“It will be as you say Great Spirit
Hope shines within me once again
I will return to living life as should be
I will share all of your truths with my people
And they will learn from my words
And pass on what they learn to their children and grand-children

The future will be as bright and promising as any vision can be
And a life of Peace and Happiness will be for all of existence
As it was intended
As it was at one time
And as it will be now again

Thank you once again Great Spirit for all you gifts I’ve received
Thank you for the wonders I so enjoy as I more through this astounding land
Thank you for the love and joy that fills my heart”

And the old one walks on to complete his path
The sky clear blue once more
The bright horizon hinting of better things to come.

Choking back the tears
She must not see
Swimming awash in visions
All condemned to the past

But I loved her
Love her yet
Aching pain, harsh scorn
Words that cut and bite

Keep me from calling her name
Hiding from the fight
Heart broken

Look at her smile
Striding out to him
I bite my lip
Seize control

Anger builds
Hate seethes
What’s this I see
He shoves away

Casts her in the street
The pain in her
I see it well
Confusion within me

I should feel the better for it
Her pain joined with mine
Yet my sadness grows
My pain increase

Want her happy
Want her free
She drifts away
Lost soul in storm

I wonder at her visions
But she liken me
Condemned to past

But I loved her
I love her still…….

This Journey I Walk

I strive to learn, to listen, to feel, to see

Hear the magic in the wind, feel the love of its embrace
The gentle murmur of the trees filling the forest
And hold in your heart the cool shade they provide
Behold the colors of rainbow in the beacon of flowers
Hear the chattering of the butterflies flitting about them in peace
Contrasted by the boisterous scolding squirrels in their ever running work

Hear the magical whispers of the earth mother drifting across this world
The heavenly sigh of the dusty dry ground as the first rain drops fall
Feel the joy in the clouds as they drift across creation
Laugh with the noisy cries of baby bird as its mother comes home
Take pleasure in the chance meeting of a new friend
Share the pain of the loosing of an old one

Let this world excite you, stir your soul with newfound awareness
The startling cascading rumble of windblown stones rattling on the roof
Heart stopping strike of lighting and thunder in an otherwise clear sky
The unintentional slip down a muddy bank into the cold clear waters below
Shudder in the rapture at the howling of the wolves on the mountaintop
Cry in the passion invoked by the sunset’s last gleams

An abundance of patience, for all things living or not
This is the only true secret, and with this I find success
Forever embracing the simple offers of life, and each instant of time
Holding sacred all around me, letting no moment be lost
For the journey is made only from the single steps combined

Vision Wisdom

Fire dancing with shadows thrown against the black of the night
Dancers from ages long past enter the circle and begin the song
Images leading me back and forth from the far past to what is yet to be
My mind searches as the spirits dance

Drums cadent to the heartbeat of the great mystery
Rumbling echo’s rebounding from canyon walls
The winds carry my dreams, fresh from the sweat of lodge
Sungmanitu tanka (the wolf) rests closely at my side

Guarding and guiding as always, wolf leads me on my path
Showing me the time of the old ones, and the wisdom that they have
I see them now, just as they were, though much of time has past
The vision clear, I begin to hear, the wisdom that they pass

They talk of life and love of all, they tell of mothers blessed
They show the people spreading out, across the land so vast
From common source, they venture forth, brothers and sisters all
And with them all the animals, the feathered, furred, and scaled

There are no nations, clans, or guilds, just life in Mother’s embrace
Black, white, or red, they’re all the same, no difference in this place
They all want peace and happiness, their children safely raised
And walk these lands with wondering eye, hold close to mystery’s face

I see it now, my people drift, from truth so long held dear
They abuse the trust; waste gifts so fine, all mostly out of fear
Fight for power and control, false dreams of what is life
And in this fighting, loosing all, all gone in endless strife

The vision fades, the drums grow still
The dark of night returns
Dancers drop to cold hard ground
Dragging breath from cold night air

And I left here, to shiver and cry
Remembering all that was…….

Gentle Gifts

Gray sky rolling above me as the light of this new day appears
No laughter from the birds, the whole of the world is stilled
Once more the clouds shed their gentle tears
The land drinks heavily of this mystery sent dew

Puddles replacing dust, proving irresistible to little feet
I turn my face to the sky, feel the gentleness of the mist
It washes away all of my cares, my heart fills with happiness
My spirit lifts like the now awash crops
Life renewed and rebirth clean
And I lift my arms and call out thanks

For this simple gift of rain…
